Sarajevo Siege Tour with Skender from Sarajevo Funky Tours

I was concerned that a tour like this could feel culturally insensitive or exploitative, but based on the outstanding reviews of this tour with this guide, we booked it, and I'm so very, very glad we did. On the contrary, I now feel like it's absolutely necessary and a must to do when visiting Sarajevo. Skender is extremely smart and knowledgeable and answered every question our group asked and then some. He lived the experience himself, and he has a passion for sharing his story and the story of others were not so lucky as to survive this terrible time in Bosnia's history. We were moved and touched by the stories and the places we visited, and I'm so glad to know more about this beautiful city and its troubled past.

Very enlightening, with some caveats to be aware of.

We chose Funky Tours as we wanted to see the tunnel museum. It was one of the first search hits, and had good Tripadvisor review. I actually find my experience a bit difficult to review. Rather than the "Tunnel Tour" per the web site, we got the "Siege Tour". The may be the same thing, I don't know. Also, we did no have Skendar as a guide as we expected. Our guide was about 32, and experience the war in Sarajevo. We got a very thorough tour of the sites, and also some things I don't expect most tourists get to see. Up in the hills we saw the Olympic sites, and got to walk on the bobsled run. We got to the Tunnel Museum and then saw the Jewish cemetary from the fence. Our guide shared his experiences, and it was a very powerful experience for us, as well. A couple caveats: we did not an overall history of the area leading up to the war as much as our guide personal experiences. The tour was billed a four hours, but went five and a half. And, the tour does take you to places that may not be for the faith of heart. And the reason that I have some difficulty in review is that our guide obviously put his heart and soul in the tour. He shared his personal experience, and was very warm and gracious. It was telling, however, when he said that if he ever got married and had kids, they would probably be fighting a war in Sarajevo.

One of the most informative tours ever

My husband and I went on Skender's Siege Tour the first day or our visit to Sarajevo. It was an amazing introduction to such a complex place. Skender was exceptionally informative and interesting - giving an eye-opening insight into what it was like to have lived here during the war. I can't remember ever having done a tour before which was so powerful, interesting and thought-provoking. I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to know more about the recent history of this fascinating place.

 Fantastic experience!

Quite simply - if you are planning to visit Sarajevo you must get in touch with SFT, as the experiences offered by Skender and his team are fantastic!

I took 2 tours during my stay, the total siege tour (1/2 day) and the Herzegovina tour (2 day). I found them both so interesting, the passion shown by tour guides really brings the subjects of the tours to life.

SFT were also very accommodating when it came to booking tours, a simple email exchange and I was able to use my time in Bosnia to the maximum.

I was already going to recommend Bosnia to friends and family but now - knowing the great experiences I've had with these guys I will be even more enthusiastic about them visiting!

Amazing

The siege tour was an absolutely fascinating and powerful window into this tumultuous period of Sarajevo's history. Skender and Faruk lived through the siege in their youth; their stories and insights are an invaluable history lesson.

Do not leave sarajevo without doing this tour...

Can't recommend this tour highly enough. While it takes in all the sadness of the siege, it also uplifting, shining a light on the humanity and spirit of tolerance that prevailed in sarajevo through the centuries. A must-do!
