Great Background

I heard about Sarajevo Funky Tours from a friend who had gone on the Total Siege Tour and based on her raves, signed up for the city tour. Skender, our guide was extremely knowledgeable and able to give a ton of historical perspective to the many sights around the city, including not only background and his own personal perspective from having grown up during the siege in the 90's but also further back across centuries of history that have shaped Sarajevo. It was a great way to get a general overview of the city and context before exploring on our own.

In addition, Skender gave us some great recommendations about places to see, eat, drink, etc. that weren't on the tour, which was extremely helpful for planning the rest of our trip.

Could not recommend more.

 A "MUST DO" in Sarajevo

We traveled to Sarajevo in November, 2011, and based on the reviews here, contacted Sarajevo Funky Tours to set up a couple of tours. Our trip was a bit last minute, but Skender was very accommodating, and we ended up joining another small group on the Total Siege Tour on one day, and then doing the Old Town tour the second day.

The Siege tour was amazing, with access to locations and sites that we never would have visited on our own. But more importantly, we would not have understood the significance of the sites or put them in context without Skender's remarkable narrative of the war. In general, we aren't big fans of tours, preferring to go places on our own, but in this case, it really was more like touring with someone we already knew, and who happened to be an expert in the local history. Skender is bright, personable, and very engaging, and we enjoyed the tour tremendously.

The next day, we went on a second tour - just the three of us, to see the Sarajevo Old Town (Baščaršija) by foot. We had already walked through the town on our own, but going through with Skender was a whole different experience, as he showed us many things we missed and took us to places we had walked by, but not really "seen" or understood. The library was a real highlight - I never would have thought to go inside to see the exhibits there. We also enjoyed visiting the Imperial Mosque and learning more about the Islamic faith. Sarajevo is remarkable that it has so many different religions represented in a small area, and one of the highlights of this tour was visiting the worship spaces of each of them - an Islamic mosque, a Catholic cathedral, an Orthodox church and a Jewish synagogue. Despite it's bloody history, Sarajevo has been very tolerant of religious differences, and this was one of the themes of the tour.

I know it will take me a long time to absorb all I learned and saw on this tour - it was a remarkable experience, and would not be the same without Skender's expertise. Highly recommended!

Best Tour we have had in 10 years of travelling

We can only endorse all of the previous reviews plus 200%. Skender is absolutely tops and goes an extra 10 miles to ensure you have the very best tour of Sarajevo. We did the Old town and the War Tunnel and only wished we could have stayed longer. Skender is passionate about his coun try, so knowledgable and as we hadn't had much time to do much research on Sarajevo his patience in answering questions was endless. Skender thank you so much - we will never forget you or Sarajevo.

A Great Introduction to an Interesting and Complex City

My girlfriend, brother and I were treated to a very informative and entertaining tour of the city that went well beyond our expectations. We only had time to do the Old Town Tour which included about four hours of one-on-one guiding through the key religious and historical sights of Sarajevo and a stream of insights into life during the war.

Funky Tours are also very accommodating in terms of your schedule and although certain tours run at fixed times, they worked with us to find the perfect time for a private tour. I would have recommended this tour at double the price but at just €14 per person it is a must do for anyone visiting Sarajevo.

 Best 3 hours in Sarajevo

Absolutely wonderful tours. Really brings Sarajevo to you in such a real, authentic way. Full of detailed history presented in a very thoughtful way, coupled with seeing the actual sites, really makes an impact.

Sarajevo with a personal touch

We had a great family tour experience. Via 2 emails we arranged a personalised tour for our family with two kids (8 and 5) which combined elements of the old city tour and tunnel tour. Great personal attention and very informative, we all took a lot from the whole experience. We even got a very useful couple of restaurant recommendations. I would recommend wholeheartedly.

You can't go wrong with Funky Tours

Skender did a great job bringing all of the events to life for us; he is very knowledgable, fun and knows how to talk his way into places that we normally wouldn't be allowed! It's rare that you can find a guide like Skender - who lived through what you want to learn about, who has an open mind to try and understand different points of view, and has the patience to answer all your questions. His passionate about what he does, and it shows. You'll thoroughly enjoy his tours!

 Simply the best

Our guide, Skender, not only picked us up at the bus station, arranged for our hotel but then spent the entire day showing us "HIs " Sarajevo. We started with the War Tunnel Tour, riding in his comfortable van. which featured the remnents of the hand-dug tunnel from a remote house on the outskirts of Sarajevo. His expalnation of the seige of Sarajevo was dramatically underscored by virtue of Skender spending fours years of his very early childhood hidden in a basement to avoid the daily shelling. The city tour which followed showed us the complicated relationship between four religions which co-exist today as well as a fun experience in "Old Town" which features a walking tour of major sites as well as the small shops where one can interact with local merchants and craftsmen.

Skender is well, educated , informed and passionate about his country. In addition he has a great sense of humor. Don't miss this experience. I'm glad we didn't!
