Baščaršija is an old Sarajevan market-place, historical and cultural centre of Sarajevo city. Baščaršija was built in 15th century, when Isa-bey Ishaković had founded entire city.
Word Baščaršija is derived from Turkish word „baš“ which means „main“, thus the whole word „Baščaršija“ means „main market-place“.
Baščaršija is twice smaller than it used to be, because of the fire in 19th century and some other destructive activities, as well done by the people in purpose or without it. Communist authorities wanted to destroy it completely in 1940's, but fortunately, they gave up from that plan.
What happened after is something we save for our tour.
